A private jet carrying Liberian President Joseph Boakai experienced a crash landing at Roberts International Airport on Thursday night, which caused widespread panic and temporarily halted all flight operations.
The incident took place as the aircraft was approaching the runway after returning from Abuja, Nigeria, where President Boakai attended the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to reports from airport officials, a malfunction in the landing gear resulted in a hard landing, which caused one of the tyres to burst upon impact. Fortunately, President Boakai and his entourage were safely evacuated, and there were no reported injuries.
The damaged jet remained on the runway for several hours, leading to the suspension of scheduled flights and significant disruption at the airport. Images of the incident quickly spread on social media, raising concerns regarding the president's safety.
Airport authorities later confirmed the removal of the jet, allowing normal flight operations to resume later that night. In a statement, airport management emphasized that the runway was safe and complied with global aviation standards, and a full investigation into the mechanical failure is currently underway.
