Ibadan Tragedy: Tanker Carrying 33,000 Litres of PMS Explodes After Collision with Vehicles

On Thursday 17th July 2025, a petroleum tanker transporting 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, lost control and collided with several other vehicles, resulting in an explosion in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

The unfortunate incident occurred at Celica Junction on the New Ife Expressway in Ibadan. The driver of the tanker experienced brake failure, which led to the loss of control while in motion, culminating in a collision with vehicles on the roadway. The resulting impact ignited a substantial fire that engulfed the tanker and adjacent vehicles.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported; however, the fire caused considerable damage to the trailer tanker and a passenger vehicle. Additionally, a Jeep was struck by the trailer and forced into a nearby drainage.

Honorable Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform and Agency Chairman, confirmed the incident to our correspondent. He stated, "The fire incident was reported at precisely 18:27 hours on Thursday, July 17, 2025, via a telephone call to the Central Fire Station Awoleke regarding the aforementioned address."

A team of fire personnel, led by Assistant Chief Fire Officer Adeniyi Adesina, was promptly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a petrol trailer tanker loaded with 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) engulfed in flames alongside a car.

"The fire brigade swiftly commenced operations by employing a chemical foam compound to contain the fire, successfully preventing its spread to the nearby NNPC petrol station and surrounding properties. The fire was ultimately extinguished in collaboration with officers from the Federal Fire Service," he added.

The root cause of the fire was identified as a failure in the braking system of the truck while in motion, resulting in the vehicle losing control, colliding with a Prado Jeep and a car, and subsequently catching fire after veering off into the open road.

Despite the extent of the fire, the emergency services successfully safeguarded the NNPC filling station and surrounding properties from potential destruction. Furthermore, Honorable Akinwande reassured the public that they could resume their daily activities without fear, as the fire has been fully extinguished.

In attendance for security and traffic management were the Director of Operations of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Engineer I.A. Adeleke, along with representatives from the Nigeria Police Force Egbeda Division, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun security agency, and the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA).
