At least four persons have tragically lost their lives in a recent attack by suspected armed assailants in Benue State. The horrible assault has been confirmed by the Special Adviser to the Governor of Benue State on Homeland Security, Air Commodore Jacob Gbamwuan (retired).
The deceased include Vitalis Kenvanger, a leader of St. Albert Catholic Church in Abata, Yogbo, and Dogo Udam, a local businessman. According to a source who requested anonymity, two of the victims were ambushed at Gyungu Azer, situated along the Udei to Yogbo road by their attackers.
The bodies of the two victims were recovered at the scene; however, two additional persons traveling with them, Mr. Iorember Famja and Mama Shiaondo, the spouse of Ioryem Ike, remain unaccounted for. Mama Shiaondo was later released by her abductors, but Mr. Iorember's whereabouts are still unknown.
Family members conveyed to Gradual Television their uncertainty regarding whether he had been abducted or killed. A search party, organized by local vigilantes in collaboration with security personnel, conducted a thorough search of the surrounding forests but has thus far been unsuccessful in locating him.
Gradual Television has learned that, although Mr. Iorember's abductors have answered phone calls from the family, they have not demanded any ransom, leading to concerns regarding the possibility of his death. A relative of the deceased church leader, Boniface Igboji, expressed his sorrow, stating, “I spoke with my brother yesterday while we were in Daudu, but I could not have foreseen that he would leave this world today due to these heinous acts perpetrated by Fulani jihadists.”
Upon inquiry, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, indicated that she had not yet received a briefing on the matter but assured that she would return the call.
