On July 30, 2025, vehicular movement along the Yelwata axis of the Benue–Nasarawa highway was blocked by protesters organized by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) demanding their immediate return to ancestral homes.
The protesting individuals, believed to be victims of ongoing attacks by suspected herdsmen, obstructed both lanes of this vital roadway for several hours, vocally expressing their demand with chants of, “We want to go back home.”
This demonstration resulted in considerable disruption, leaving numerous motorists and passengers stranded. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the displaced individuals, many of whom have endured prolonged stays in overcrowded IDP camps, are exhibiting profound frustration regarding the government’s perceived failure to restore security in their communities.
One protester conveyed to reporters, “We have suffered enough. We want to return to our homes and farms.”
As a precautionary measure, security personnel were deployed to monitor the situation and mitigate any potential escalation. Nonetheless, tensions remained elevated at the time of reporting.
Attempts to obtain comments from the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant authorities were unsuccessful.
