On Tuesday, July 16, 2025, Major General Moses Gara, the Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), conducted a routine operational tour of key military formations in Benue State, specifically at Kula, Forward Operating Base (FOB) Awume, and Agagbe, all within Sector 1 Area of Responsibility.
This visit was part of a comprehensive field assessment initiative aimed at sustaining operational effectiveness and enhancing the welfare of troops deployed throughout the theatre. During the tour, Major General Gara engaged directly with frontline personnel, evaluating essential aspects of administration, logistics, combat readiness, and overall personnel well-being.
In his addresses to the officers and soldiers at each location, the Commander underscored the crucial role that welfare plays in the success of missions. He emphasized the necessity of adequate nutrition, sufficient rest, mental resilience, and the proper maintenance of weapons and equipment. Major General Gara inspected kitchen facilities, interacted with mess staff. He participated in meal sessions with the troops, highlighting the need for hygienic and nutritious food as fundamental to maintaining stamina, alertness, and high morale.
"The quality of nutrition must never be compromised," he stated, affirming that "it directly impacts performance on the field". Additionally, Major General Gara urged the troops to take responsibility for the upkeep of their personal weapons, referring to them as "a soldier's closest ally in battle."
Regarding rest and recuperation, the Commander instructed local commanders to implement structured pass and leave rotations that do not impede operational momentum. He recognized the psychological and physical significance of downtime in sustaining long-term effectiveness.
The tour concluded with a strong appeal for troops to maintain vigilance, intensify patrols around farmlands to enhance food security, and uphold an unwavering commitment to their duties.
The presence and messages delivered by the Commander were positively received by the officers and personnel of OPWS, as the operation continues to play a vital role in countering armed threats and ensuring stability within the region.
