On Monday, July 27, 2025, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Governor of Benue State, attended the NBA North-Central Security Summit, which focused on the theme: "Strengthening Security, Rule of Law, and Justice Delivery in North-Central Nigeria."
In his opening remarks at Nnam Hotel, Makurdi, Governor Alia expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Bar Association for organizing the summit and addressing critical issues related to security, the rule of law, and justice within the region. He acknowledged the significance of selecting Benue State as the venue for this important event.
The Governor emphasized his administration's commitment to establishing an economy driven by functional education, employment generation, and agricultural development, all within a secure environment. He stated that this commitment reflects his government’s resolve to restore enduring peace to Benue State.
Governor Alia recognized the collaborative efforts of security agencies and community stakeholders, which have contributed to an improved security situation in certain areas previously affected by insecurity.
Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity for innovative strategies, transformative dialogue, and collective action to promote peace, uphold the rule of law, and enhance justice delivery systems throughout the North-Central region.
“As leaders, it is our collective responsibility to unite in purpose and action, drawing upon our shared expertise and experiences to develop sustainable solutions that restore public trust in our institutions and ensure the safety and prosperity of our citizens,” the Governor remarked.
He informed attendees that the Benue State Government has demonstrated its commitment to reinforcing security, the rule of law, and justice delivery, which are vital for fostering peace, stability, and development in the region.
The Governor elaborated that during his administration's tenure, substantial attention has been directed towards security through investments in law enforcement agencies, including the provision of vehicles and enhancements to local security posts and patrol systems, among other initiatives.
Governor Alia urged all participants to commit themselves to peacebuilding, emphasizing that their efforts today will establish the groundwork for a more secure, equitable, and prosperous future for the populace.
Prior to the Governor's address, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the President of the Nigeria Bar Association, conveyed a goodwill message, expressing deep appreciation for Governor Alia's leadership and gracious support in hosting the summit. He characterized the NBA North-Central Security Summit 2025 as a decisive call to action, affirming their commitment not to remain silent in the face of escalating insecurity in the nation.
President Osigwe reaffirmed the NBA’s dedication to advocating for policy reforms, promoting civic education, and ensuring accessibility to justice for all, with the goal of establishing a justice system that safeguards the vulnerable, holds perpetrators accountable, and reinforces public confidence.
The Governor was accompanied by Deputy Governor Barr. Sam Ode mni, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Bemsen Mnyim Esq., members of the Benue State Executive Council, and other senior government officials.
