Benue IDP Reports Alarming Statistics: 380 Pregnancies and 45 Births in Just One Month

Mrs. Grace Ashi Wende, the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Primary HealthCare Board (BSPHCB), announced that approximately 49 births have been recorded at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp located at the International Market, which accommodates victims of the Yelwata attack, over the past month.

During a recent briefing with journalists, held in conjunction with the Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) visit to the camp, Mrs. Wende indicated that there are currently around 380 pregnant women in the camp who are nearing childbirth. She also stated that approximately 490 women attended AnteNatal Care (ANC) services during this period.

Mrs. Wende confirmed that the clinic within the IDP camp has experienced a surge in activity, with a notable increase in consultations and services utilized by IDPs across various age groups and genders.

She expressed her gratitude to the Benue State Ministry of Health (SMOH) and other state partners, including UNICEF and various United Nations agencies, for their contributions facilitating the construction of a borehole and the installation of a 3HP hybrid submersible pump at the facility.

During a recent visit to the site, representatives from Saturday INDEPENDENT observed the installation of piping for the distribution of water from the newly constructed borehole. Additionally, BENSESA was present to manage waste removal from the large refuse containers.

Mrs. Wende highlighted that Save the Children International has provided hygiene supplies to the camp, thereby enhancing the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives.

She concluded by stating, “The 49th baby has been safely delivered at the Ultramodern Market IDP camp clinic," commending the multidisciplinary healthcare team for their collaborative efforts involving the Benue State Ministry of Health (SMOH), the SPHCB, UNICEF, and other United Nations agencies.
