On Thursday, September 11, 2025, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, Chief Medical Director of Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), welcomed a delegation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the APIN Public Health Initiative for an advocacy visit.
This visit, conducted in the office of the Chief Medical Director, was aimed at enhancing the HIV response in facilities supported by APIN throughout Benue State. The CDC delegation undertook a review of ongoing sustainability initiatives, evaluated program implementation, and identified opportunities for deeper collaboration with the teaching hospital.
In his remarks, Dr. Hwande underscored the recent advancements in patient care within the hospital. He highlighted improvements including the upgrade of medical equipment, the establishment of enhanced hygiene standards, improved lighting, and consistent access to clean water, all contributing to BSUTH’s commitment to elevating healthcare delivery for its patients.
Dr. Hwande assured the visiting delegation that all donated resources and support would be utilized effectively. He emphasized that robust partnerships are essential for achieving better patient treatment outcomes and strengthening the health system statewide.
During the meeting, Mr. Paul Okoye, representative of CDC Nigeria, commended the hospital’s dedication to excellence. He praised Dr. Hwande’s result-oriented leadership and expressed confidence in BSUTH’s ability to effectively and sustainably manage donor-supported health programs.
Mr. Okoye reiterated the CDC’s ongoing support and commitment to ensuring the continuity of these programs. He emphasized that enhanced collaboration among the hospital, CDC, and APIN would significantly improve the HIV response and overall healthcare services in Benue State.
