Major General Moses Gara, the Force Commander of the Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), has officially announced the conclusion of the Basic Drone Operation and Jammer System Training, which was organized for officers and soldiers within the OPWS Area of Responsibility.
This event took place on September 17, 2025, at the Joe Akaahan Cantonment, located in Makurdi. During his address as the Special Guest of Honour, Major General Gara underscored the significance of this training in enhancing operational efficiency, particularly in the domains of force protection, surveillance, and search and rescue missions.
He noted that with the newly acquired drone capabilities, troops are now able to identify objects and monitor activities from distances exceeding 3,000 meters, thus providing a substantial advantage in confronting adversaries.
He stated, “There are individuals within our society who persistently engage in activities that jeopardize peace and security, resulting in the unnecessary loss of innocent lives. With the deployment of these drones, we can accurately identify their hiding places and undertake appropriate actions.” He further encouraged the participants to apply the skills they had acquired during the training to their daily operations, thereby reinforcing the operational successes already achieved by the OPWS.
The Force Commander expressed deep gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff for sanctioning both the provision of drones and the organization of the training. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), the Chief of Training (Army), and Major General UG Ogeleka, the Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Command, for mobilizing a team of instructors at short notice. Special acknowledgments were extended to Colonel Kolawole Bukoye, the Commander of the 401 Special Forces Brigade and Sector 1 OPWS, for hosting the event, as well as to the instructors for their commitment to excellence.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating participants, Captain OJ Abua expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Force Commander for facilitating this valuable training opportunity, assuring that the knowledge acquired will be effectively implemented in field operations.
Key highlights of the closing ceremony included a course appraisal briefing, closing remarks delivered by the Special Guest of Honour, a vote of thanks, practical demonstrations performed by the participants, and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
