MTN Announces Temporary Network Shutdown in Adamawa, Borno, and Kano States for Maintenance

MTN Group Limited, formerly known as M-Cell, is a South African multinational corporation and mobile telecommunications provider. The company has announced that it will conduct a scheduled network maintenance exercise on Friday, October 25, which will temporarily disrupt connectivity in certain areas of Adamawa, Borno, and Kano States in Nigeria.

This information was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. The maintenance window is scheduled to last two hours, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., and will impact 101 network sites across 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the aforementioned northern states.

MTN Nigeria clarified that this maintenance is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance network reliability and strengthen fiber infrastructure in the region. The company stated, “This planned maintenance continues the restoration work we commenced in August 2025 along the same route. The exercise will ensure stronger, more resilient connections for our customers in the affected regions.”

The operation involves a fiber cutover on a newly relocated cable segment between AFCOT and Bawo village. This initiative aims to replace previously damaged sections and reduce the number of joints that have compromised optical performance and overall network stability.

MTN described the maintenance as an integral part of a comprehensive network upgrade intended to eliminate recurring faults and improve connectivity for users in northern Nigeria. The areas expected to be affected include Nasarawa LGA in Kano State, as well as Girei, Song, Mubi North, Hong, Gombi, Fufore, Mubi South, Madagali, Michika, Maiha, Chibok, and Yola North in Adamawa State, in addition to Askira/Uba and Shani in Borno State.

The company also indicated that services across 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, together with 10 enterprise connections, will be unavailable during the maintenance window due to the linear and unprotected nature of the fiber route.

MTN expressed sincere apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause and appreciates the understanding of its customers as it endeavors to provide a more stable and efficient network experience. The company assured that connectivity will be fully restored immediately following the maintenance period, reiterating its commitment to improving network quality, uptime, and resilience across underserved regions of the country.
