The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), located in Ondo State, has announced that a total of 240 out of 2,747 graduating students will achieve first-class honors during the institution's 36th convocation ceremony.
In a statement issued by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, during a press conference organized to mark the forthcoming convocation, it was disclosed that 1,479 students graduated with second class honors (upper division), 912 students received second class honors (lower division), and 116 students will graduate with third class honors.
Professor Oladiji further highlighted that Akindunbi Aduragbemi Isaac from the Department of Civil Engineering is recognized as the Overall Best Graduating Student, attaining a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.98 out of 5.0.
Additionally, the Vice Chancellor indicated that the university will confer Postgraduate Diplomas upon 86 students, Master of Technology degrees upon 627 students, and 154 students will receive Doctoral degrees.
Professor Oladiji also noted that approximately 3,000 students from the university are currently benefiting from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
“Regarding NELFUND, it appears that the level of awareness among students is relatively low. We are actively working to enhance their understanding of the program. Moreover, there is a prevailing disposition whereby many students question the necessity of financing their education through loans. Consequently, the lower application rates are not indicative of government failure but rather reflect students' reluctance to apply. Presently, the Bursar reports over 3,000 students are recipients of this loan scheme,” stated the Vice Chancellor.
In emphasizing the role of FUTA in the global academic landscape, Professor Oladiji asserted that the institution is fulfilling its promise as one of Nigeria's foremost centers of academic excellence. It has become a destination of choice, where advanced research and product development aimed at addressing societal needs are integral to its culture.
“FUTA is reinforcing its reputation as a leading research-intensive institution and a premier center of excellence in technological education, specifically tailored to meet the emerging challenges both locally and globally. This is particularly relevant in the domains of climate and space science, agriculture, engineering, and computing and digital expertise.
“At FUTA, faculty members and students are increasingly engaged in significant global academic endeavors, participating in pioneering research and product development. The university is also making substantial contributions toward addressing food insecurity in the country,” Professor Oladiji emphasized.
