Michael Jackson's Iconic Sock from 1997 Tour Fetches Over $8,000 at Auction

A sock worn by late pop star Michael Jackson during his concert in France in the 1990s was sold for more than $8,000, as reported by a French auctioneer.

A technician discovered the used sock discarded near Jackson's dressing room following the concert, which took place in the southern city of Nîmes in July 1997, according to auctioneer Aurore Illy.

During his "HIStory World Tour" in 1997, Jackson was known to wear white athletic socks embellished with rhinestones, as noted by the specialist website interencheres.com. He is prominently featured in performance footage of his hit song "Billie Jean" while donning these socks.

Years later, this off-white sock exhibits significant signs of wear, including stains and yellowing rhinestones, as depicted in an image available on the auction website. Illy described the item as "an exceptional object" and indicated that it holds cult significance among Michael Jackson enthusiasts.

Initially valued between 3,000 and 4,000 euros (approximately $3,400 to $4,500), the sock ultimately fetched 7,688 euros (approximately $8,822) at the auction house in Nîmes.

In comparison, a Macau gaming resort purchased a glittering glove worn by Jackson during his inaugural "moonwalk" performance in 1983 for $350,000 in 2009. Furthermore, the hat he wore before that performance was auctioned for over $80,000 in Paris in 2023.

Michael Jackson passed away at the age of 50 in 2009 due to a fatal overdose. He continues to maintain a substantial fan base, notwithstanding the child molestation allegations made against him both during his life and posthumously, which he and his estate have consistently denied.
