The Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Moses Gara, reaffirmed his dedication to ensuring the safety and security of the residents of Agatu Local Government Area (LGA).
Major General Moses Gara made this declaration during his visit to the villages of Iwarri, London, and Ikpele within Agatu LGA on Thursday, August 7, 2025. He was accompanied by a distinguished delegation that included senior military officers, representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, the Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Services (DSS), and personnel from the Navy.
The delegation featured notable figures such as Lt. Colonel Agwon, Commanding Officer of the 72 Special Force Battalion; Lt. Colonel S.O. Lawal, the Component Commander of the Nigeria Police Force; and the Component Commander of the Nigeria Navy, alongside several other senior officers and lieutenants. They received a warm welcome from the Chairman of Agatu LGA, Hon. (Amb). James Melvin Ejeh.
During the visit, Major General Gara initiated a thorough clearance operation in the Agatu LGA, strategically deploying troops to boundary communities adversely affected by recent insecurity. He issued a stern warning to criminal herdsmen operating in the area, urging them to vacate and allow tranquility to prevail. He underscored the operation's steadfast commitment to maintaining the safety and security of Agatu LGA.
“We shall exert every effort to prevent further attacks and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” asserted Major General Gara. “The peace that has returned to Agatu during this period serves as a model for stability in North Central Nigeria, and we will not permit criminal elements, benefiting from the existing turmoil, to regress Agatu to a state of insecurity.” He affirmed that Agatu will be purged of all armed herdsmen and criminal elements immediately.
In his remarks, Hon. Ejeh expressed profound gratitude to the security agencies for their relentless efforts in maintaining peace and safety in the region. “We will continue to nurture a robust collaborative relationship with the security forces to ensure our communities remain secure,” he stated. He also acknowledged the steadfast commitment of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia to combating crime within the state, noting that Agatu LGA has significantly benefited from his security initiatives aimed at safeguarding lives and properties.
This visit occurred in the wake of renewed attacks on several villages within Agatu LGA, which resulted in the displacement of residents. However, with the commitment of Operation Whirl Stroke and the support of the local government, residents can have confidence in their safety and security.
