On October 22, 2025, at approximately 10:59 PM, a tragic incident occurred at a checkpoint situated along the Otukpo-Ohimini Road in Benue State. Armed assailants reportedly ambushed and opened fire on two security personnel, resulting in the death of Inspector Akpan Ogbole of the Nigeria Police Force and injuring Abechi Oche of the Nigeria Forest and Hunters Services.
The officers were promptly transported to Otukpo General Hospital for medical attention, where Inspector Ogbole was subsequently pronounced dead. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital mortuary, while Officer Oche is currently receiving treatment.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants, who were operating a vehicle along the road, initiated the attack on the security personnel positioned at the checkpoint. The gunmen absconded with an AK-47 rifle belonging to the police as well as a pump-action gun assigned to the Forest and Hunters Services.
The Benue State Police Command has verified the occurrence of this incident and has initiated an investigation in an effort to apprehend the individuals responsible for this attack. According to SP Udeme Edet, the Police Public Relations Officer, the matter remains under active investigation.
