WAEC Conducts a Trial Computer-based Essay Test in Preparation for The 2026 Exams Onwards

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has successfully carried out a trial test on essay writing in preparation for the Computer-Based WASSCE for School Candidates from 2026 onwards as confirmed by Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC's National Office in Nigeria, on Thursday October 23, 2025, at the WAEC Training and Testing Center in Ogba, Lagos.

Across Nigeria, some Senior secondary school students participated in the trial, which aimed to familiarize them with the forthcoming computer-based format that combines both objective and essay components. Dr. Dangut explained that the goal is to prepare candidates for full participation in digital examinations while addressing technological disparities among schools across the country.

In September, WAEC reaffirmed its intention to transition to a fully computer-based testing format by 2026. This transition, which began with private candidates in 2024, has already made "significant progress" and will be expanded nationwide ahead of the upcoming deadline. Dr. Dangut informed the students that they were making history as the first group to undertake a complete computer-based test that includes both objective and essay sections.

He noted that while some schools will administer both components online, institutions in areas lacking computer access will continue to utilize the traditional essay format. "Our aim is to create an inclusive system where every student can take the examination conveniently, regardless of their location," Dr. Dangut stated. He assured participants that the new system would enhance the efficiency and accessibility of the examination, promoting fairness and comfort for all candidates involved.

Dr. Dangut reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to upholding the integrity and credibility of its examinations while supporting students in their pursuit of academic excellence. He encouraged students to embrace digital learning, emphasizing that technology-driven examinations represent the future of education and are essential for global competitiveness.
