Benue Governor Alia Expresses Gratitude to Ijir Tamen I Tiv for Second-Term Endorsement

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has extended profound appreciation to the Ijir Tamen I Tiv (Supreme Council of the Tiv Nation) for its endorsement of his bid for a second term in office.

The endorsement, announced under the leadership of His Royal Majesty, Orchivirigh Prof. James Iorzua Ortese Ayatse, Tor Tiv V, was described by Governor Alia as a “historic pronouncement and unique gesture” from the apex traditional authority of the Tiv Nation.

“This overwhelming vote of confidence in my leadership, integrity, and the transformative strides already being witnessed across the state is both humbling and deeply inspiring,” the Governor stated.

Governor Alia assumed office on May 29, 2023, inheriting a state on the brink of collapse amid challenges in security, infrastructure, and economic stagnation. In the intervening two years, his administration has delivered tangible results across key sectors, earning widespread acclaim for pulling Benue toward stability and growth. Among the highlights:

Agriculture and Food Security: Ensured timely delivery of subsidized fertilizers to farmers, boosting yields in the "Food Basket of the Nation." Flagged off distribution of 4,000 tenera oil palm seedlings to youth groups in September 2025, aiming to create millionaires through palm production within three years and positioning agriculture as a driver of youth empowerment.

Infrastructure and Transport: Initiated construction of 16 roads in Makurdi metropolis, underpasses in Makurdi and Gboko, and rural road networks. Rejuvenated Benue Links Transport Company by procuring and handing over 100 new buses, subsidizing fares, and upgrading headquarters to global standards, enhancing mobility and economic access.

Education: Donated computers to Benue State University’s Computer-Based Test center and awarded scholarships to 44 first-class graduates for postgraduate studies. Paid examination fees for all public secondary school students sitting WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB in 2023/2024 as fuel subsidy palliatives, while implementing policies to elevate standards from primary to tertiary levels.

Healthcare and Humanitarian Aid: Pioneered Nigeria’s first implementation of the Revised Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) 2023 at updated rates. Launched a five-year action plan for internally displaced persons (IDPs), providing emergency shelters and sustainable livelihoods amid ongoing security challenges.

Security and Welfare: Strengthened community-based security through volunteer networks, reducing incidents in vulnerable areas. Improved civil servant and pensioner welfare, including arrears clearance, while attracting federal support for projects like the Buruku–Gboko–Wannune–Ugbema Integrated Water Supply.

Youth and Women Empowerment: Established the Benue Youth House in Makurdi and integrated youth into economic initiatives, alongside programs uplifting women through skills training and access to resources.

These initiatives, as detailed in the administration's August 2025 scorecard, have restored public confidence, fostered unity, and laid foundations for prosperity, with endorsements from groups like the North Central Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) affirming Alia's model of compassionate governance.

He commended the Ijir Tamen I Tiv for recognizing the administration’s achievements in driving development, peace, and prosperity in Benue State.

Governor Alia reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to his covenant with the people, pledging to continue rebuilding, renewing, and restoring the state with transparency, equity, and compassion.

“This endorsement reaffirms the unity, wisdom, and foresight of our revered traditional institution. It is a testament to the collective resolve of the Tiv people and all Benue citizens to consolidate progress and ensure continuity of good governance,” he added.

Assuring the Tor Tiv and the Ijir Tamen I Tiv of his renewed dedication, Governor Alia said: “This honour will only strengthen my resolve to serve with greater zeal, humility, and accountability.” He reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting inclusivity, fairness, and sustainable development across all communities in Benue State.

The Benue State Government extended heartfelt gratitude to the Ijir Tamen I Tiv, the six ruling houses of Kwande, Jemgbagh, Lobi, Jechira, Gwer, and Sankera, and the entire Tiv Nation for their demonstrated love, trust, and solidarity.

“Together, as the Almighty God continues to reign, we will forge ahead to make Benue a land of peace, progress, and shared prosperity,” Governor Alia concluded.
