U.S. Lawmakers Call for Sanctions Against Miyetti Allah Over Alleged Religious Violations

In response to the ongoing Christian genocide and other challenges faced by religious communities in Nigeria, the United States House of Representatives has called upon the Departments of State and Treasury to consider imposing sanctions on certain individuals and groups, including the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.

This action is a reaction to grave allegations of religious freedom violations affecting many in Nigeria.

The resolution, H. Res. 860, introduced by Rep. Christopher Smith and supported by Rep. Paul Huizenga, commends former President Donald Trump for redesignating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” due to alarming reports of persecution against Christians and other religious minorities.

Citing various reports from non-governmental organizations and media, the lawmakers highlighted distressing acts of violence attributed to Islamist terrorist groups and Fulani militias, which have led to the tragic loss of lives, abductions, and the destruction of places of worship, particularly in regions like Benue and Plateau States.

In a compassionate plea, they urged the U.S. government to impose targeted visa bans and asset freezes under the Global Magnitsky Act and to recognize Fulani militias as Entities of Particular Concern.

They also emphasized the importance of tying U.S. foreign aid to measurable improvements in human rights, advocating for direct humanitarian assistance to faith-based organizations that support displaced individuals and communities.

In response, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, expressed concern over the CPC designation, viewing it as stemming from "misrepresentation and misinformation."

He emphasized that the challenges of terrorism impact both Christians and Muslims in the country, underscoring the need for unity and understanding amid these complex issues.
