In Taraba State, the Tiv and Fulani communities within the Gassol local government area have formalized a peace agreement aimed at resolving the longstanding conflicts between the two ethnic groups for over decades.
The peace accord initiative, facilitated by the leadership of the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) under the command of Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, took place on Monday and has been recognized as a pivotal step towards achieving enduring peace in Taraba State.
During the meeting convened at the conference room of the 6 Brigade Headquarters in Jalingo, Brigadier General Uwa articulated that this action is part of the Brigade’s ongoing non-kinetic approach to peacebuilding.
The intervention was necessitated by escalating tensions and longstanding disputes between the Tiv and Fulani communities in the local area. In a proactive measure to preempt violence and restore mutual trust, Brigadier General Uwa extended invitations to key stakeholders, including the council chairman, Abubakar Usman, traditional leaders, elders, and security representatives, to engage in discussions regarding peaceful coexistence.
While denouncing the recurrence of communal violence, the Commandant urged against individuals or groups taking the law into their own hands. He underscored the importance of the rule of law. He encouraged participants to act as ambassadors of peace and development, asserting that meaningful progress can only be achieved through unity and mutual respect.
Brigadier General Uwa commended the proactive efforts of the Gassol Chairman in rallying support for the peace initiative. Representatives from both ethnic groups agreed to forsake hostility, promote open dialogue, and reject the protection of criminal elements within their communities.
Furthermore, they collectively pledged to collaborate closely with security agencies and to share timely intelligence as a means of preventing future conflicts.
Expressing his appreciation for the decisions made, the council chairman commended the Nigerian Army, particularly the troops of the 6 Brigade, for their dedication and efforts in fostering peace in Gassol. He emphasized that the initiative is timely and essential for rebuilding trust and cooperation among the communities.
Both parties formally signed the peace accord, affirming their commitment to the extracted resolutions and vowing to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure their comprehensive implementation.
