The grand finale of the 2025 Igede Agba Yam Festival occurred on Friday at The Pavilion in Oju, located in the Oju Local Government Area of Benue State. The event drew thousands of spectators, dignitaries, and community members from across Benue State and beyond.
Leading the delegation from the State Government, Deputy Governor Barr. Dr. Sam Ode represented His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia. He delivered an impactful speech underscoring the significance of cultural preservation and the promotion of unity within the community.
In his address, the Deputy Governor commended the Igede nation for its resilience, solidarity, and steadfast commitment to cultural values. He characterized the Agba Yam Festival not only as a celebration of the yam harvest but also as a profound reflection of the community's roots, identity, and interconnectedness.
"The festival underscores the timeless principle that culture constitutes the essence of a people," he articulated. "By safeguarding and commemorating our traditions, we provide our children with a sense of belonging, pride, and purpose. Such festivals are essential in transmitting values of diligence, gratitude, and unity across generations."
He reaffirmed the government's dedication to fostering peace, unity, and development throughout Benue State, stating that cultural festivals such as this serve to enhance harmony among diverse groups.
The Deputy Governor also extended his congratulations to His Royal Majesty, the Adirahu Ny'Igede, HRH CP Oga Ero (Rtd.), along with the entire Igede traditional council, for their efforts in maintaining and promoting their cultural heritage.
He acknowledged the importance of cross-cultural exchanges, highlighting the presence of Tor Jechira, HRH Engr. Edward Ujege advocated for the Adirahu Ny’Igede to reciprocate such gestures during the hosting of similar festivals by other communities.
Dr. Sam Ode praised the industry and diligence exhibited by the Igede people and emphasized ongoing development initiatives, specifically noting progress on the Oju–Awajir Road, which has already achieved 10 kilometers of completed work.
Furthermore, the Deputy Governor encouraged active participation in the ongoing voter registration exercise to ensure that the populace remains empowered and enfranchised.
A prominent highlight of the event was the conferment of the traditional title of “Ochonye of Igede” on Dr. Sam Ode, in addition to a Humanitarian Award of Honour presented to Dr. Chris Agoha from the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue.
The festival’s royal host, HRH CP Oga Ero, expressed gratitude towards the governor, government officials, and attendees for honoring the occasion. He described their presence as an affirmation of affection for the Igede nation and offered prayers for blessings and safety for all participants.
The celebration showcased vibrant traditional dances, masquerades, and cultural exhibitions, with numerous high-ranking government officials and esteemed sons and daughters of the Igede nation in attendance.
